Roadtrip and new obsession

Eryk and I went on a little roadtrip to Marfa, TX. A tiny town in west Texas that has an interesting artist/ hipster community... Not a lot to do there in January but it was nice to get away.
While there I found this shop called Wool and Hoop. The owner (and author of book below) was super sweet and very enthusiastic about crewel embroidery. So I got myself a little start kit and tried it out...
My first attempt at crewel embroidery... I liked doing it and Im sure Ill make a straight line with some practice. Katherine's work is much more impressive so you should check her and also see the amazing selection she has for sale online.

On the way home we caught this guy (squirrel at the bottom corner of the brown quilt, he wasnt keen on a closeup or mug shot ;)...) stealing batting out of a quilt. Guess quilt batting make for a pretty good nest insulter.

Ladybugs

Another custom baby quilt that I recently made. I like the back just as much as the front. My boyrfriend says he dosent really get the asymmetric piecing on the back of quilts, what do you guys think? I also used some cute coordinating ribbon on the front.

Last Project

I out this design on a baby quilt for a friend of mine. I like how it turned out and it really wasnt as hard as I had thought it was going to be! The best part is that the fabrics I used came from a package of flannel swaddling blankets I found at Target. Essentially the swaddling blankets are just 36 x36 pieces of flannel with a stitched edge (and about 4 for 8 bucks). The fabrics were to cute and already coordinating so why not? The truly awesome apart is that my friend had bought the bedding for the baby in the SAME design! Crazy! I had no one idea but it really worked out.

From Momma, My new Bernina 830

My class project!
This machine can quilt beautiful patterns .
It makes button holes automatically!
It does lettering for Monograms!!!
Here is my new machine with out the embroidery module attached. I can't wait to fly solo on this thing! But first I have to master a few basics.....

From Momma

Hi, I am Tiffany's mom! She wanted me to share with you so here goes!

When I was three years old I fell in love! My grandma had an old treadle sewing machine. When you stepped on the bottom cool things happened up top. One day I decided to jump up and down on it while Grandma was not there to stop me. The feed dogs grabbed my thumb into the machine and the needle made three stitches before breaking off in my finger! LOVE HURTS OUCH!!!!

OK, Fast forward almost 50 years, I am still in love with sewing machines and this week I bought a Bernina 830! It cost almost as much as a car but love is not cheap. Before I was allowed to give them any money I went to a pillow party to have some hands on time with the demo machine. Then after I purchased the machine the sales rep. spent two and a half hours going over the basics BEFORE I was allowed to take it home. I am now signed up for a 3 hour class once a week from now until the middle of April. There is a big learning curve here and I feel a little like my three year old self standing before a fascinating piece of machinery!

I'll post a picture of the pillow I made in class. And I hope to share with all of you as I learn, all over again, how NOT to sew your fingers into the machine.

Love,
Momma
